Welcome! The name for our branch comes from the Myakka River, which spans about 66 miles from Myakka Head to its outfall in Charlotte Harbor and drains an area of approximately 600 square miles. The Myakka River Watershed is located in portions of several counties including Hardee, Desoto and Charlotte with the majority of the watershed located in Manatee and Sarasota Counties. It is an important part of our local ecology and a vibrant example of our natural sustainable heritage. When searching for an identity for our new branch it seemed an appropriate symbol to represent the ideals we stand for.
The Myakka River Branch was formed in March of 2009. We operate under the umbrella of the Florida Gulf Coast Chapter but seek to serve members within a more focused geographic region. Our branch was created primarily to serve members in the greater Sarasota, Manatee, DeSoto and Hardee county area, although we also welcome participation from neighboring areas.
Initial support for the formation of our branch has been overwhelming. Thank you to everyone who has contributed so far. The branch governing council is in place and we look forward to reaching out to current and new members in our area.
Membership
Membership for the Myakka River Branch is handled at the chapter level. In order to affiliate yourself with the branch, you must join the chapter. See the chapter membership link in the menu to the left or click here for more information on how to join. Membership does have its privileges. In addition to getting discounts to branch events, you get to associate yourself with a likeminded group of green-thinking professionals in your local area. Please support our branch and join today.
Committees/Volunteer Opportunities
In addition to membership, volunteer opportunities exist for several different committees at the branch level. Each committee represents a different focus within the branch. Please see the Committees Page to the right for more information on our committees, chairs, co-chairs and contact information. Please contact the chair or co-chair for specific volunteer opportunities. In order to serve on a committee you must also be a member of the chapter.
Branch Events
The Myakka River Branch holds monthly membership meetings at various venues throughout the area. Membership meetings provide great opportunities for socializing and networking with fellow branch members. We also host supplemental programs from time to time on topics regarding sustainability, LEED certification and accreditation, and other relevant green building issues. Please check the Calendar of Events link in the menu to the left for information on upcoming branch programs and events. Chapter membership also entitles you email notifications for these events.
