The Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ Program addresses the serious problems of pollution in stormwater runoff, water shortages and disappearing habitats by enlisting Floridians in the battle to save our natural resources. This hands-on outreach program, which is implemented through the counties’ UF/IFAS Extension Service, provides education to local communities that helps residents create a Florida landscape with minimal negative environmental impact; a Florida-Friendly landscape.

Emerging Green Builders LEED Green Associate Scholarship Information: Deadline April 1, 2010

The Myakka River Branch of the USGBC is offering one scholarship for an EGB member of the Branch to take the LEED Green Associate Exam.

The scholarship will cover the $50 application fee, the $150 exam fee, a spot in a Chapter or Branch exam preparation workshop, and the appropriate study materials (total scholarship value not to exceed $350).

Fees will be paid by scholarship winner and reimbursed by the Branch after the winner has completed the exam preparation workshop and is ready to take the test. Reimbursement will not be contingent upon passing the exam.

The scholarship will be awarded based on the following criteria:
-applicant must be an EGB member in good standing of the Florida Gulf Coast Chapter and not have graduated earlier than the fall semester of 2004
-applicant should have attended 4 Myakka River Branch events in 2009 or commit to attending 4 in 2010
-applicant must demonstrate how the LEED Green Associate credential will benefit them in their career or future profession
-applicant must demonstrate that they can meet the GBCI Eligibility Requirements to take the exam

Submit applications (download below) to Ross Russo (ross@jonswiftinc.com) by January April 1, 2010. The Myakka River Branch Governing Council will make an award at the May 2010 meeting.

An Overview of Materials and Resources, April 27, 2010
Are you familiar with the LEED rating systems? Many people don't realize that what you consume during everyday building operations can be just as important as what went into the building during construction. The EBO+M rating system differs significatntly from other LEED rating systems. Several of the differences can be found in the Materials and Resources credits. Architect Jedd Heap of Carlson Studio Architecture will explore the EBO+M Materials and Resources credits and how they differe from those in the other LEED rating systems.  For those who are interested, you can download a copy of the presentation slides below:

Water Efficiency: A Holistic View, February 23, 2010

Energy Made Simple, January 14, 2010
